This is a very personal tragedy for Legacies in Motion as we have several humanitarian projects there and Legacies in Motion’s Project Director for Haiti, Barbara Wander, was in Port-au-Prince volunteering at one of our school projects during the earthquake. Miraculously, Barbara survived and stayed for one week to courageously assist in the rescue effort in Riviere Froide.
Legacies in Motion’s projects in Haiti are located in a rural community called Riviere Froide south of the Carrefour suburb of Port-au-Prince. This suburb, with nearly 500,000 people was one of the hardest hit in the earthquake as it was almost at the fault-line. Nearly 90% of the buildings were destroyed. This is a very poor district, where about half of the adults under the age of 65 were unemployed and the average income was a little more than $10 a week.
Legacies in Motion’s projects in which we support in Riviere Froide (joined with Missions of The Little Sisters of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus) includes:
--A handicapped program where 25 handicapped children live and about 100 other children come for education and food. Since the earthquake, these children are living outside in makeshift tents. We know that 3 have died, but we don’t know how many more.
--The school in Riviere Froide had 650 elementary students, 450 secondary students, and 350 extremely poor students who can only attend the afternoon school program. This school also had 11 teachers and a principle. We are saddened to estimate deaths in the earthquake and aftermath to include over 100 children, the principle, and 3 teachers.
--Children from Riviere Froide who are now orphans
--Clinics to support the health of the community
--Housing to further the independence of individuals within the community
There are approximately 200 children and adults living directly in Riviere Froide with approximately 5,000 people in the surrounding foothills which have all suffered death and destruction. Legacies in Motion is committed to supporting this community in the long term. It is now a matter of life and death. We are deeply affected by this tragedy to our friends and we are reaching out to you for support. Please donate generously to the survival of the people of Riviere Froide. At the present time, water, food, medicine, gasoline, and temporary shelter is desperately needed.
By becoming a donor to our Riviere Froie, Haiti projects, Legacies in motion will keep you updated regularly, so you know exactly where your funds are being spent with photos and updated news.
In the future, Legacies in Motion, will assist in Riviere Froide to rebuild schools, housing, and supporting education. In addition, Legacies in Motion is committed in working towards empowering Haitian’s towards an economic recovery in self sustaining programs and projects in education, agriculture, and farming.
Please join us on this journey of recovery and compassion.
Together we can make a difference.
Thank you,
